Digital Divides (VISUAL - Doodly Animation)

Updated: Nov 8, 2019

As technology becomes more prevalent and blurred between our personal, educational and work worlds, the gap between the have's and have-not's is widening. For fluent digital natives from affluent areas, it's hard to imagine life without all the devices. Access is taken for granted, along with the skills needed to navigate these tools. But for those who have to use the computer at the local library (if they have one) or share a classroom device to get online, usage becomes extremely restricted. This reduces skill base acquisition necessary to get by - teachers and future employers need to have a certain standard of digital literacy, which may not be achievable with such limited accessibility.

This Doodly was made by Allira Cornell, site author. VISUAL COMPONENT OF ASSESSMENT.

Here's a link to my Pinterest board on Digital Literacy. It covers the Digital Divide, worldwide statistics and trends, plus some solutions teachers are using to overcome it. Also included are some fantastic ICT tools for use in and out of the classroom.

The difference in accessibility creates a digital divide which will be seen in learning outcomes. Without online access, students' minds struggle to come up with fertile ideas. The internet acts like water for well-seeded brains. It is up to teachers to plant those fields, making sure the water used is of good quality.
